Thomas Wesley is Selected As OTC Instructor of the Year
His creative teaching style, passion for electronics, and rapport with students is a clear indication why Thomas Wesley received the 2013 Rick Perkins “Instructor of the Year” award for Okefenokee Technical College.
Wesley, an experienced electronics technician, is an Okefenokee Tech electronics honor graduate. Upon graduation, Wesley continued his education, earning an associate’s degree in electronics technology and a bachelor’s degree in information technology with a specialization in network administration. Wesley is currently pursuing a master’s degree in computer science/software engineering.
Thomas began full-time employment at OTC in 2007 and has since earned additional certifications, including international test administrator from the Electronics Technician Association (ETA), fiber based system installer, integrated voice messaging systems, and copper based system installer. He has also had considerable field training to include locomotive electrical systems and biomedical instrumentation.
He is a member of several organizations, including Phi Beta Lambda Professional (PBL), ETA International, Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), Georgia Biomedical Instrumentation Society, and 100 Black Men of Southeast Georgia. Thomas is also a youth football coach for the Ware County Recreational Department.
The Rick Perkins Award for Excellence in Technical Instruction honors the Technical College System of Georgia’s most outstanding instructors. Wesley represented OTC at the region competition March 1. The state winner, who serves as an ambassador for the Technical College System of Georgia, will be announced in the spring.
The award has been an ongoing statewide event since 1991 and is designed to recognize technical college instructors who make significant contributions to technical education through innovation and leadership in their fields. Formerly known as the Commissioner’s Award of Excellence, the award was renamed in honor and memory of Thomas “Rick” Perkins, an instructor at West Central Technical College, who received the Commissioner’s Award of Excellence prior to his untimely death.
“I chose to teach Electronic Technology at Okefenokee Technical College to improve the lives of my students and my community,” said Wesley. “It is rewarding for a former student, who now has a family and kids, to offer thanks and share their experiences of how the knowledge gained in my program helped them in their career. As a two time graduate from the Technical College System of Georgia, I feel it is a privilege to share with students what I have learned. The Technical College System of Georgia provided me the opportunity to change my life, and I am honored to help continue the trend.”
Okefenokee Technical College President Dr. Glenn Deibert and the OTC faculty and staff wish to congratulate Thomas Wesley and recognize him as very deserving of the OTC 2013 Rick Perkins award.
