Tammie Shaw Receives Brooksie A. Pike Scholarship
Tammie Shaw of Alma was recently selected as the 2012 Okefenokee Technical College Brooksie A. Pike Scholarship recipient for fall semester.
OTC cosmetology instructor Ollie Harkleroad and OTC Foundation Director Cindy Tanner presented Shaw with an award check and congratulated her for outstanding performance and success.
Shaw was recommended for the scholarship by Harkleroad, who described her star student as “goal oriented” and “a prime example of what the scholarship represents.” “I believe that Dr. Pike had students like Tammie in mind when he and Mrs. Pike established the Brooksie Pike Scholarship Fund,” stated Harkleroad. “Tammie is a hard worker, punctual, and conscientious. She takes pride in her work.”
Shaw, a 2003 GED graduate, credits Mrs. Harkleroad with preparing her well for the workforce. “My instructor has been very diligent to train us in what to expect once we graduate,” Shaw wrote on her application. “She genuinely wants us to be successful,” Shaw continued. “We come in early, dress neat, and always put our clients first, even if it means staying late. Thanks to OTC, I have no reservations about my career and what to expect.”
Shaw will use her scholarship check to pay for the cosmetology state board exam and other items that will help advance her career, explained Tanner.
The Brooksie A. Pike Scholarship was established by Dr. and Mrs. John Pike and other family members to pay tribute to Mrs. Brooksie Pike, Dr. Pike’s mother, who had a forty-year career in cosmetology. To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must be full-time cosmetology students entering their final quarter at Okefenokee Technical College with a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average and excellent work ethics grades.
Two Brooksie A. Pike Scholarships are awarded each year to outstanding cosmetology students at Okefenokee Tech. The OTC Foundation would like to congratulate Tammie Shaw and thank the Pike family for establishing the scholarship fund.
Ms. Shaw thanked Tanner, Harkleroad, and the Pike family for the scholarship.
