WAYCROSS, Ga., Feb 4, 2019 — Okefenoke REMC recently donated $2,500 and a bucket truck to Coastal Pines Technical College’s Electrical Lineworker program. The funds, as well as the vehicle, are intended to help provide students the necessary tools to support their training and successful completion of the program.
“Education in the community is one of our cooperative core principles,” notes Travis Page, manager, OREMC Distribution Services, “so this donation not only helps the students, but us as well. By investing in our students who live and work in the communities we serve, helps develop and promote our future work force.”
“Our partnerships with local businesses like Okefenoke REMC is an essential part of our core mission.”, states Dr. Glenn Deibert, President of Coastal Pines Technical College, “We know it is important to provide hands-on training to our students using the same equipment used by local employers and sometimes this can only be accomplished when our industry partners donate specialized equipment like this bucket truck. I also want to thank Okefenoke REMC for their monetary donation to the Electrical Lineman program, it will help us to provide the training needed for our students to graduate and start a new and exciting career.”
Page explains the bucket truck was being retired from the OREMC fleet, but still has a useful life. Rather than selling the vehicle at auction, it was determined the truck would be an enhancement to Coastal Pine’s Electrical Lineworker training program. Combined with the monetary donation from OREMC—made possible by unclaimed capital credits—the college will be able to assist students in purchasing necessary equipment and books required to complete their certification.
“We work hand-in-hand with the program instructors as training continues to evolve based on industry safety and best practices,” Page says. “They know what we need from their graduates, and we know what they need to ensure the students master the necessary skills.” Page, along with OREMC General Foremen Chris Crews, Mike Boatright and Randy Thomas, sit on the college’s Electrical Lineworker Advisory Board.
