One Wednesday Morning, Coastal Pines Technical College Had the Opportunity to Shine

August 30, 2018 08:09 AM

The Southeast Georgia Alliance, a joint development authority of six counties, hosted a group of Project Managers from the Georgia Department of Economic Development.  The Project Managers serve as the contacts for businesses who are considering Georgia as a location for their business.  Also in attendance were representatives from the local development authorities and electrical companies from the six counties.

Dr. Glenn Deibert, President of Coastal Pines Technical College (CPTC), was honored to introduce two Dual Enrollment students to share how CPTC, through Dual Enrollment, helped them in their educational and professional careers.

First to share was Tayler Hutto.  Tayler is the reigning GOAL Student representing CPTC.  Tayler shared how she got involved with Dual Enrollment and Coastal Pines.  As salutatorian of her 2017 class, everyone expected her to take a scholarship to one of the well-known universities in Georgia.  But that wasn’t the goal Tayler had her eyes set on.  She knew early in her high school years that she wanted to be an x-ray technoligist.  When meeting with her high school counselor, she shared her goal and asked for advice on how to get there. This is where Dual Enrollment was suggested to her.  She started by taking core classes that CPTC was offering at her own high school campus.  There she completed all of her core requirements during high school and was accepted into the Radiologic Technology program to begin the Fall Semester after high school graduation.  Tayler will graduate from the Radiologic Technology Degree Program in December 2018. She accredits CPTC’s Dual Enrollment program with preparing her for college, and essentially her future career.

Next up was Miranda Wainscott, who was a Dual Enrollment student at CPTC’s Jesup campus.  Miranda and her family moved to Georgia from Kentucky the summer before her sophomore year in high school.  In Kentucky, she was on pace to graduate from high school early.  Her father researched opportunities in Georgia and determined Dual Enrollment (or Move on When Ready at the time) was the perfect fit for his very determined daughter.  At fifteen years old, Miranda began taking college courses at CPTC and ramped up throughout her high school years.  By December of her senior year, she had met the requirements for her Associates Degree in Criminal Justice.  She started her sophomore year of college at the College of Coastal Georgia during her senior year of high school and has gone on to work part time at the Glynn County District Attorney’s office. Her time in Dual Enrollment through CPTC taking criminal justice courses allowed her to transition into her job at the DA’s office with foreknowledge of the system.

Both of the students expressed the importance of achieving so much during their high school years.  Tayler and Miranda will complete their goals and enter the workforce in the field they desire much earlier than their peers, and likely with little to no college debt.
