Ms. Isabel Delk GED Test Scholarship Fund Announced
December 14, 2015 05:52 PM
Miss Isabel (see left), an icon at the Flash Foods on Central Avenue, is the inspiration for a new GED Test Scholarship fund at Coastal Pines Technical College. The fund was established in honor of this very special lady who recently celebrated her 90th birthday and is still working,
Ms. Kelly Peacock, adult education director for Coastal Pines Technical College, accepted the initial contributions for the scholarship fund to assist single mothers in obtaining their GED. “The adult education GED classes are designed to enable adult learners to gain the skills necessary to compete successfully in today’s workplace,” said Peacock. “The classes are free; however, the GED test requires a fee, which is sometimes prohibitive. This fund will be a great resource for single mothers.”
“Miss Isabel,” as her customers affectionately call her, overcame many obstacles over the years to support her family as a single parent. She was widowed from the love of her life at a young age with two children. Over the next few years, she married, had two more children, and divorced, becoming a single parent of four children. Ms. Delk knew she had to have an education to support her family, so, on her own, she obtained her GED, graduated from Perry Business school and Dale Carnegie, worked three jobs at one time for it seemed like eight days a week, and in 2015 was still working for the Jones Company (Flash Foods) at 90 years old.
“There is no better season than Christmas to announce this scholarship to assist single mothers who find themselves in a similar life situation as my mom back then,” said Pamela.
Tax deductible contributions may be made to the Coastal Pines Technical College Foundation, 1701 Carswell Avenue, Waycross, Georgia.
