Auxiliary members of the Mayo Clinic Health System in Waycross made a significant contribution to the Okefenokee Technical College (OTC) Foundation at year end 2014. Frankie Royer, auxiliary president, presented CPTC President Dr. Glenn Deibert with the donation check. The OTC Foundation will use the very generous contribution to fund scholarships for deserving students enrolled in healthcare programs at Coastal Pines Technical College.

The Waycross-based auxiliary established the President’s Scholarship Fund with the Okefenokee Technical College Foundation in 2008 to provide scholarships to students in healthcare programs at OTC, now CPTC. The gift presented this year is an additional donation that will fund scholarships in 2015 and increase the principal of the endowed scholarship fund.

The auxiliary’s mission, according to Stephanie Smith, MCHS Director of Volunteers, is to ensure quality healthcare workers for the future.

“We sincerely appreciate this gift that will assist healthcare students in realizing their career goals,” said Deibert.

The idea for the scholarship fund came as the organization’s members planned their 2008 annual banquet. Traditionally, the auxiliary gifts the outgoing president with a token of appreciation. In 2008, auxiliary members decided to honor Auxiliary President Rex Abbott (2006-2008), as well as all past and future presidents of the auxiliary, with an Auxiliary Presidents’ Scholarship Fund to benefit students enrolled at OTC (now CPTC). Abbott retired from OTC in 2002, after 38 years of employment there.

According to Cindy Tanner, Executive Director of the OTC Foundation, the names of past presidents of the SRMC Auxiliary can be viewed at CPTC’s website: http://www.coastalpines.edu/otc-foundation/otc-foundation-scholarships/

The Auxiliary supports Mayo Clinic Health System and the community by providing equipment, patient services, and various scholarships, including the Auxiliary Presidents’ Scholarship, from proceeds of the Gift Shop and annual fundraisers, such as book, jewelry and clothing sales.
