Haleigh Tanner of Blackshear was selected in December as the 2014 Coastal Pines Technical College (CPTC) Brooksie A. Pike Scholarship recipient, just about the time she was preparing to graduate from the CPTC cosmetology program and take the Georgia Cosmetology State Board Exam.
CPTC cosmetology instructor Debra Moody and Okefenokee Technical College Foundation Director Cindy Tanner presented Tanner with an award check and congratulated her for outstanding performance and success. Haleigh used the award money to pay for the exam and other fees associated with establishing herself as a professional, certified cosmetologist, explained Tanner.
Ms. Tanner was recommended for the scholarship by Moody, who described Haleigh as a confident individual who applies herself and works hard. “I have no doubt Haleigh will be successful,” stated Moody.
“Mrs. Moody has been one of the most influential instructors I have had in my postsecondary education experience,” Tanner wrote on her application. Mrs. Moody’s influence was fully established when Haleigh said she would, in fact, like to become a cosmetology instructor after gaining on-the-job experience.
The Brooksie A. Pike Scholarship was established by Dr. and Mrs. John Pike and other family members to pay tribute to Mrs. Brooksie A. Pike, Dr. Pike’s mother, who had a forty-year career in cosmetology. To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must be full-time cosmetology students entering their final quarter at Coastal Pines Technical College with a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average and excellent work ethic grades.
OTC Foundation trustees and CPTC President Dr. Glenn Deibert would like to congratulate Haleigh Tanner and thank the Pike family for establishing the scholarship fund. Haleigh aslo thanked Tanner, Moody, and the Pike family for the scholarship.
