As the guest speaker of the 81st Annual Waycross-Ware County Chamber of Commerce Banquet, CSX President Clarence Gooden took center stage of the beautifully decorated Railway Express Agency to share the status of the railroad industry and give the audience a glimpse into the world of railroad management.
Following the presentation, the incoming Chamber chairman, Dr. Glenn Deibert (see photo on right), thanked Gooden and presented him with a certificate of appreciation, which reads, “In grateful recognition of courtesies extended as the guest speaker of the 81st annual Waycross-Ware County Chamber of Commerce Banquet given this 5th day of February, 2016, Historic Railway Express Agency, Waycross, Georgia. The certificate includes a provision for a scholarship honorarium of $500 to be awarded to a deserving student in the Railroad Systems Management Technology program at Coastal Pines Technical College. The award will be named the Clarence Gooden Railroad Management Scholarship, and applications will be available in March for summer semester, which begins in May 2016.
Gooden (see below photo) was appointed CSX President in September 2015 with responsibility for Operations and Sales and Marketing. In this role, he provides leadership and is held accountable for the safe, reliable operation of more than 1,200 trains daily and a highly diversified market portfolio serving all facets of the North American economy.
A Waycross native, Gooden grew up here and graduated from Waycross High School in 1970. His career at CSX began in Waycross where he was initially hired to clean rail cars, making it most appropriate for Mr. Gus Karle, former CSX superintendent of the Waycross terminal, to introduce Gooden.
As a member of the leadership team since 2004, Gooden has helped CSX become a highly focused and increasingly profitable leader in freight rail and logistics services. His career with CSX spans more than 40 years and has included senior management positions in both Operations and Sales and Marketing.
