CPTC Students Win Big at SkillsUSA Competition

Thirty-three Coastal Pines Technical College (CPTC) students competed at the SkillsUSA Georgia Leadership and Skills Conference in Atlanta March 25-28, 2015. CPTC had 12 competitors place in the top three, with six students awarded gold, the highest honor. The competitions, referred to as championships, allow students to take the skills, knowledge and experience they have gained in the classrooms and labs to a higher level. Contests are based on industry standards, and business leaders design and judge the competition.

Representing CPTC were Amber Anderson (Jeff Davis), Mary Barney (Glynn), Cyntoria Baron (Appling), Brent Berry (Camden), Sherry Blanton (Appling), Shelby Brantley (Wayne), Ercie Cano (Glynn), Thang Duong (Glynn), Melinda Durden (Brantley), Kimberly Dyal (Appling), Nathan Fry (Camden), Shuntisk Gaskins (Glynn), Caitlin Griffin (Jeff Davis), Gunter Hendrix (Ware), Whitney Hires (Wayne), Danielle Hopkins (Brantley), Kayla Hunter (Appling), Ashley Kersey (Jeff Davis), Justin Miles (Pierce), Robert Naves (Glynn), Christina Powell (Jeff Davis), Cynthia Ratliff (Charlton), Katrina Rucker (Pierce), Josh Sears (Coffee), Sarah Jo Surrency (Wayne), John Thornton (Glynn), Josh Thornton (Glynn), Candice Vaughn (Appling), Autumn Wheeler (Appling), Ketina Wilcox (Jeff Davis), Brittany Williams (Glynn), Lindsay Williamson (Ware), and Stephanie Womack (Wayne).

CPTC students earning a medal were Brent Berry, 1st place, electronics technology; Stephanie Womack, Caitlin Griffin, Christina Powell, and Whitney Hires, 1st place, health knowledge bowl; Shuntisk Gaskins, 1st place, job skills demonstration; Nathan Fry, 2nd place, job skills demonstration; Sarah Jo Surrency, 2nd place, nursing assistance; Sherry Blanton, 2nd place, health professional portfolio; John Thornton, 3rd place, CNC turning specialist; Autumn Wheeler, 3rd place, first aid/CPR; and Justin Miles, 3rd place, telecommunications cabling.

As gold medalists, Berry, Womack, Griffin, Powell, Hires, and Gaskins will advance to the National Championships and compete at the national conference in Louisville, Kentucky, in June.

“We are extremely proud of all CPTC students who competed,” said CPTC President, Dr. Glenn Deibert. “Each one represented Coastal Pines Technical College well and is on track to become a successful member of the workforce and a community leader.”

The event provides an opportunity for students to perfect their skills, gain confidence, and be recognized, added Stephanie Roberts, CPTC student activity coordinator. “We wish the best to those who will compete at the national level.”

The Georgia Championships are supported by over one thousand business and industry partners who give of their time and expertise to support the contests and expo. The total in-kind and monetary contributions from business and industry for the event exceeded $750,000.

SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled work force. The organization sponsors the SkillsUSA Championships annually to recognize the achievements of career and technical education students and to encourage them to strive for excellence in their chosen occupations.

Coastal Pines Technical College SkillsUSA advisors Thomas Wesley, John Davis, Eddie Murray, Lee Clark, Katherine Ellis, Sheryl Nipper, DJ Everett, Stephanie Roberts and Chef Lee Cranz accompanied students to the state conference.
