Maxine and Bill Higginson smilingCoastal Pines Technical College (CPTC) President Dr. Glenn Deibert is pleased to announce that the Coastal Pines Technical College Foundation Board has funded a scholarship to honor the life of Maxine McNeal Higginson. Maxine, a dedicated homemaker from Blackshear who loved Christ, her family, and others, passed away March 27, 2016, after a brief illness.

Her legacy regarding the College and Foundation was her generosity toward and support for technical education as evidenced through the words and actions of her husband, Bill Higginson, one of the three charter members of the Coastal Pines Technical College Foundation, a college-affiliated organization established in 1990 as the Okefenokee Technical Institute Foundation. At most any foundation meeting over the past 25 years, during the course of a short conversation with Bill, trustees would learn something about Maxine – her travel plans for the two of them; what new recipe she was testing; or other similar undertakings, many of which involved the grandchildren, cooking, or gardening.

“It has always been obvious to us that Maxine was “the love of his life,” and his best friend,” said Cindy Tanner, executive director of the Foundation.

Tuesday evening, October 4, 2016, the Technical College Foundation Association (TCFA) recognized Higginson, treasurer of the CPTC Foundation, as the CPTC Foundation Volunteer of the Year for 2016. Volunteer of the Year awards, reserved for those who have genuinely make a difference in the success of the organization, in accomplishing its mission, are traditionally announced at the TCSG Leadership Conference Awards Banquet. This year’s conference was held at the Hyatt Regency in Savannah October 3-5, 2016.

Award winners embody the best ideals of philanthropy, leadership and volunteerism through their dedicated service to their technical college. Higginson, who is held in high regard by fellow trustees, was nominated for the award in 2015, as well, and recognized as the local award winner at the 2015 conference in Atlanta and again at a regular foundation board meeting in November 2015.

Larry Paulk, chair of the organization, presents the foundation treasurer, Bill Higginson“I can’t think of anyone more deserving,” stated Larry Paulk, CPTC Foundation Board Chair, when he presented Higginson with the award at the fall 2015 board meeting. “I have heard Bill attribute his accomplishments in life to Maxine numerous times,” Paulk said to Deibert when announcing the memorial scholarship, “which is why it is so fitting for the Foundation to fund a scholarship in honor of her life.”

The $500 scholarship will be awarded in 2017 to a deserving CPTC female student who demonstrates love for others through her charitable actions, volunteer work, and strong work ethic. The CPTC Foundation is a 501(c)3 organization established to support the academic programs and initiatives of Coastal Pines Technical College.
