Nurse Re-Entry / Refresher Program

This Nurse Re-Entry / Refresher Program is pending approval from the Georgia Board of Nursing. If approved, then it will be listed in Facilities That Have Previously Offered RN Reentry Programs. This program will satisfy the requirements of 40 hours of study and 160 hours of clinical for licensure by endorsement or reinstatement for registered nurses who have not satisfied the requirement of at least five hundred (500) hours of practice as a registered nurse or graduation from an approved nursing education program within four years of the date of their application.

Program Outline & Competencies
  • Module I (Online Study): Revitalize Pharmacology Skill Set (12.5 Hours)
    • Competency #1: Pharmacology, Drug Calculation, & the Nursing Process in Administering Medications
      • 1. State the ten rights of drug administration.
      • 2. Identify patient safety concerns: errors, orders, labels, records.
      • 3. Solve dosage problems using basic math such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of decimals and fractions to solve dosage problems.
      • 4. Interpret the various abbreviations utilized in medication administration.
      • 5. Identify principles of teaching/learning related to medication administration.
      • 6. Discuss legal/ethical issues as related to medication administration.
      • 7. Demonstrate administering an oral medication.
      • 8. Demonstrate withdrawing medication from an ampule.
      • 9. Demonstrate withdrawing medication from a vial.
      • 10. Demonstrate mixing insulin in one syringe.
      • 11. Demonstrate administering a subcutaneous injection.
      • 12. Demonstrate administering an intramuscular injection.
      • 13. Demonstrate starting an IV and Hanging of IV Fluids for adult and child.
      • 14. Demonstrate administering IV Piggyback Medications
      • 15. Demonstrate administering of sensory medications
      • 16. Demonstrate how to calculate pediatric and advance drug calculations problems
    • Competency #2: Medication Administration across the Lifespan
      • 1. Discuss pharmacologic effects of drugs on the body.
      • 2. Discuss the impact of herbal treatments on medication administration.
      • 3. Discuss the impact of blood transfusions on medication administration.
      • 4. Discuss the nursing process and patient center care of drug administration.
  • Module II (Online Study): Promote Nursing Knowledge (27.5 Hours)
    • Competency #1: Physical & Health Assessment
      • 1. Discuss how to perform a basic interview utilizing appropriate communication techniques.
      • 2. Discuss how to gather the necessary information to complete a health history.
      • 3. Demonstrate knowledge of client rights as they relate to assessment.
      • 4. Relate assessment to the nursing process (critical thinking).
      • 5. Discuss the basic techniques used to perform a physical assessment.
      • 6. List additional techniques used in the assessment of the client experiencing domestic abuse.
      • 7. List some developmental, cultural and spiritual considerations to be aware of in the assessment process.
    • Competency #2: Cornerstone of Nursing
      • 1. Identify initial (personal) definition of nursing, components and concepts of holistic nursing practice, caring, health, and the client and environment.
      • 2. Describe the importance of nursing codes & standards of practice as guidelines for providing nursing care.
      • 3. Review of Georgia RN Nurse Practice Act and Board Rules
      • 4. Describe the philosophy and the current scope of practice for registered nursing.
      • 5. Discuss the utilization of effective & appropriate communication techniques when providing nursing care.
      • 6. Utilize basic professional communication for problem solving.
    • Competency #4: Respiratory Disorders
      • 1. Demonstrate assessment of respiratory function.
      • 2. Contrast the management of patients with upper and lower respiratory disorders.
      • 3. Analyze the management of patients with chronic pulmonary disorders.
      • 4. Contrast different respiratory modalities.
      • 5. Contrast the use and implications of different pharmacologic agents in managing respiratory disorders.

  • Module III (Clinical): Establish Clinical Judgement for Practice  (160 Hours)
    • Competency #1: Assessment of Patients with Respiratory, Cardiovascular, Gastrointestinal, Neurological, Sensory Disorders, Musculoskeletal, Renal/Urinary, Endocrine, and Reproductive Systems
      • 1. Demonstrate assessment of respiratory, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, neurologic, sensory, musculoskeletal, renal urinary, endocrine, and reproductive system
    • Competency #2: Management Fluid, Electrolyte, Acid-Base Imbalances, and Shock/Hemorrhage
      • 1. Demonstrate care to clients receiving medications for fluid and electrolyte imbalances.
      • 2. Demonstrate nursing care for clients experiencing signs and symptoms of commonly occurring complications, shock, & hemorrhage
    • Competency #3: Management Digestion, Nutrition, & Elimination; Renal/Urinary System & Excretion
      • 1. Demonstrate care of clients with gastrointestinal (GI) disorders.
      • 2. Demonstrate care of clients with renal urinary disease processes
      • 3. Apply nursing implications or selected diagnostic testing, medication, and treatment associated with urinary disorders
    • Competency #4: Regulation and Management of the Endocrine System
      • 1. Demonstrate care of clients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM).
      • 2. Demonstrate care of clients with other endocrine disease processes
      • 3. Apply nursing implications or selected diagnostic testing, medication, and treatment associated with endocrine disorders
    • Competency #5: Management Respiratory System and Oxygenation
      • 1. Demonstrate care for the client with commonly occurring respiratory disorders.
      • 2. Demonstrate preventive methods to reduce complications for client at risk for respiratory problems
      • 3. Apply nursing implications or selected diagnostic testing, medication, and treatment associated with respiratory disorders
    • Competency #6: Regulation and Management of Cardiac Output, Tissue Perfusion and Cardiac Disease Processes
      • 1. Demonstrate the care of clients with coronary vascular diseases
      • 2. Demonstrate understanding of early signs and symptoms of critical complications of heart disease
      • 3. Apply nursing implications or selected diagnostic testing, medication, and treatment associated with cardiovascular disorders 
    • Competency #7: Management of Mobility & the Musculoskeletal System; Sensation & the Sensory System
      • 1. Demonstrate the care of clients with musculoskeletal disorders.
      • 2. Establish goals with client to ensure pain management in the client with musculoskeletal disorders.
      • 3. Apply nursing implications or selected diagnostic testing, medication, and treatment associated with musculoskeletal disorders
    • Competency #8: Management Neurological and Sensory System
      • 1. Demonstrate the care of clients with special senses disease process/disorders
      • 2. Apply clinical interventions and medical management of neurological and sensory disease process
      • 3. Apply nursing implications or selected diagnostic testing, medication, and treatment associated with neurological and sensory disorders
