912 Sports will name a Coastal Pines Technical College Player of the Week each week during the 2019 high school football season. The week eight winner is Brantley County High School senior defensive back, Dawson Thomas.

Dawson Thomas played a big role in Brantley County’s 40-14 victory over Tattnall County this past Friday night in Nahunta. Thomas made his presence felt on offense, defense and special teams for the Herons who improved to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in Region 2-AAA with the win.

The senior defensive back recorded 11 total tackles including five solo stops and a tackle for a loss. He also blocked a punt, recovered an onside kick and for good measure ran 42 yards for a touchdown on a reverse on his only carry of the game to help the Herons to the win.

For his impressive all-around performance, Thomas has been named the Coastal Pines Technical College Player of the Week in the 912 Sports coverage area.

“Dawson is the epitome of a Brantley County Heron,” said Brantley head coach Geoff Cannon. “He’s gritty, tough, hard-working and loves the weight room. “He’s the best open-field tackler I’ve coached in 18 years.”

For the season, Thomas leads the Herons with 65 tackles. Cannon noted that Thomas has a 4.0 grade-point average and also is already taking some college classes.

“In the 22 months that I’ve been at Brantley County, Dawson has really matured,” Cannon said. “He’s continuing to develop and grow not only as a football player, but as an outstanding young man.”

Thomas will be back on the field with the Herons this Friday as they travel to Baxley to face Appling County in region play.
