Georgia Power representatives recently presented a $15,000 donation from the Georgia Power Foundation to the Coastal Pines Technical College(CPTC) Foundation. The donation was made in memory of Georgia Power retiree Robert Stokes and will be used to fund scholarships for students enrolled in the Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Program.

Stokes, who retired in June 2016 as Hinesville area manager, was enrolled at Coastal Pines and was finishing his HVAC certification. His goal was to use his certification to help the elderly in his community with their air conditioning needs. Unfortunately, before he could undertake this new mission of community service, he passed away in June of 2016.

"The donation will help ensure that Robert’s memory and legacy are honored and that his goal of helping the community will be realized," according to Kingsland area manager and CPTC board member, Joel Hanner.  Hanner enjoyed a long personal and professional friendship with Stokes both during his career and into his retirement. "Robert was definitely a mentor to me," said Hanner.  "He always ended every conversation by saying to call if I needed anything. Robert Stokes was the epitome of servant leadership and he is deeply missed by all who knew him."

Stoke's wife, Dee retired from Georgia Power in 2016 as a customer service representative in Jesup. His son, Garion Stokes, is an engineering supervisor in Statesboro. Garion was on hand to present the check.

President Glenn Deibert thanked the representatives for making the time to come from various area locations for the check presentation. Deibert stated, “This donation will help many students including those that struggle to put themselves through school for a second career just like Robert Stokes.”
