Coastal Pines Forestry Program Visits Local Saw Mill

March 11, 2019 05:02 PM

The Coastal Pines Technical College Forestry Program recently visited Varn Wood Products Chip-n-Saw mill in Hoboken, GA.  The students in the program learned how the logs are received into the mill and how they are then processed.  The mill generates chips from the sawmilling process which are then used to produce fuel pellets.  Facility tours with local industry partners are one of the many ways that Coastal Pines students get hands on learning experience for their futures in the field of study.

“In a time when many mills are reluctant to allow mill tours, Varn Wood Products walks the students through the facility detailing the milling operation thoroughly.  This is my 14th time touring Varn Wood Products Hoboken Sawmill, and I am thankful to have them as a community partner.” states Tommy Peagler, Forestry and Timber Harvesting Program Instructor.

“It was a great visit, everyone showed real interest in the operation and future of the lumber industry in our area.  We’re glad to have Tommy and his classes to show what goes on in making lumber.” says Mr. John Talbert, Mill Manager. Varn Wood Products, LLC is located in Hoboken, GA.

The Forestry Technology program is a sequence of courses that prepares students for employment in the field of forestry. The technical knowledge and skills in this program focus on forest biology, forest products, forest protection, forest management, forest measurements, and surveying and mapping.
