Celebrating Manufacturing in Georgia with Local Art
April 3, 2017 03:22 PM

In April, Georgia celebrates the importance of manufacturing in our state with a week’s worth of activities called Manufacturing Appreciation Week. It’s an annual event that recognizes the contribution of manufacturing to Georgia’s economy. An important part of this event is the Student Design Competition, which involves children and teens in the celebration and teaches them about manufacturing.
Each year in early January, students in the Wayne County school system are encouraged to submit artwork to Coastal Pines Technical College to be entered into the competition. Students are asked to depict the importance of manufacturing to their lives and communities. Coastal Pines Technical College employees are always pleased with the many local submissions and talented young artists that participate with creative drawings showing manufacturing scenes from around the State. Four winners are chosen from the statewide submissions, and there are four winners in each of three categories: Grades K-5, Grades 6-8 and Grades 9-12.
Recently the administrators at James Bacon Elementary were notified that among their entries, a winner was chosen! Cameron Ryan Devereaux was selected as the second place winner of the art competition in Grades K-5 from around the state! Her art depicting Georgia manufacturing included Rayonier, Lay’s, Coca-Cola and YellaWood. As a state level winner, Cameron will be honored at the upcoming Governor’s Awards Luncheon. Governor Deal will present Cameron with a certificate, and a $300 monetary scholarship. Cameron’s winning entry will be hanging with the state level winners’ art at the Governor’s Awards Luncheon on April 27, 2017 at the Georgia International Convention Center in Atlanta.
Cameron, a fifth grader at James Bacon, is the daughter of Lisa and Lewis Devereaux.
