Air Conditioning Technology Class Visits a Mini-split System Site

Students stand around a mini split AC system(Baxley) Coastal Pines Technical College’s Air Conditioning Technology students visited JM Forestry the first week in May to learn about an up and coming system that is not readily available for hands on learning and observation in a classroom.  Instructor John Davis, is always seeking opportunities to share with his students cutting edge developments in the Air Conditioning field.  It so happened that Mr. Davis has a student, Austin Whitaker, who has been working at Appling Heating and Air on a complex project.  Appling Heating and Air installed a mini-split system with a complex VRF system.  Mr. Davis requested that his students be allowed to tour the facility to learn more about the Mini-Split System at JM Forestry site where it was now operating.

It is predicted that the Mini -Split Air Conditioning and Heat Pump Systems will have 20% of the market within the next five years.  Mini-Split Systems are halcyon systems that eliminate the need of a basement or attic-located evaporator unit and bulky ductwork by using thin copper tubing that pumps refrigerant directly to discreet wall mounted and concealed units inside.  Remarkably, the same unit works in reverse in winter, absorbing heat from the outside air and moving it indoors to heat the home.  The Halycyon systems are available for even the most difficult to heat and cool areas.

Students participating in the trip to JM Forestry include:  Robert Harper, Antonio Jenkins, Taylor Sharpe, Logan Simmons, Christian Hall and Austin Whitaker of Appling Heating and Air (see picture above with instructor John Davis).
