January 22, 2019 10:52 AM
2019 Winner, Nikki Thompson

On Monday, January 14, 2019, faculty, staff, and community members gathered for the unveiling of the 2019 GOAL Student, and Rick Perkins Award Instructor for Coastal Pines Technical College (CPTC). This is an honor that is given each year to a Coastal Pines student and instructor after a series of screenings, and interviews.

The 2019 GOAL winner was Heather Nikki Thompson, is in the Radiologic Technology program on the Waycross campus. Her nominating instructor was Donna Yeomans. Nikki is a Brantley county native with two children, who she states are her motivation. She is in the National Technical Honor Society, the President of the Lambda Nu Radiologic and Imaging Sciences National Honor Society, an excellent student, and plans to continue her education in the Radiologic Technology field.

Nikki came to Coastal Pines with a drive to take charge of her life and find something that made her happy. Her future goals include becomingregistered with The American Registry of Radiologic Technologist, and additionally continuing her education and becoming certified in more modalities; such as Vascular Sonography and Mammography within the next five years, working full time in a hospital imaging department, and most importantly, being happy and excited to go to work each day. Nikki credits the Radiologic Technology program with not only increasing her knowledge of the field, but also developing life skills; such as, patience, empathy, and listening skills.

“The single most important thing that I have learned in my program is that you are never too educated. You can learn something new every day in life, as well as your career.” states Nikki. "Once starting at a technical college, I was amazed at the commitment of my instructors. They had such passion for their profession, it’s contagious. The hands-on approach that the technical college offers has given me the skills and confidence that I will make an amazing tech one day. The guidance that I have received has helped me thrive in the clinical setting and classroom enough that I have been accepted not only into Lambda Nu, which is the Radiologic and Imaging Sciences National Honor Society, but also the National Technical Honor Society. My decision to attend a technical college is by far the best decision I have ever made and not only because of my classroom success."

The Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL) is a program of the TCSG that recognizes and pays respect to the outstanding students in our colleges.  Nikki will advance to the regional competition in February, as well as the state competition in April.
