(February 11, 2013) – Aaron Kareem Gibbs, a marketing management student at the Jesup Campus, was selected as Altamaha Technical College’s Student of the Year, through the GOAL (Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership) program, last month. GOAL recognizes top students from each of the state’s 25 technical colleges and a Board of Regents college with a technical division.
Gibbs will serve as an ambassador for technical education in Altamaha Technical College’s seven county service delivery area of Appling, Camden, Glynn, Jeff Davis, Long, McIntosh and Wayne.
Gibbs competed against two other students, who were nominated for the award by their instructors. The 2013 GOAL Finalists include Angela Summerville, a Criminal Justice Technology student at the Golden Isles Campus, and Jacob Farrar, an Electronics Technology student at the Jesup Campus. The competition included a paneled interview and written essay.
“We congratulate Aaron, and know that he will represent Altamaha Technical College well at the regional competitions, to be held later this month,” said Altamaha Technical College President Lorette M. Hoover.
Gibbs chose Altamaha Technical College because it provided a hands-on experience, was close to home and will help him “mold the skills I need to succeed in society.”
“Technical education provides higher job placement and guarantees that I will be properly trained to be an asset to an employer,” said Gibbs.
Gibbs served in the U.S. Army as a Squad Leader Platoon Sergeant (2001-2009) and was bestowed two Army commendation medals in 2006 and the Army Commendation Medal with “Valor” Device in 2003. A graduate of James Island High School in 1997, he was also named Most Valuable Player on the high school football team. He volunteered as a recreational league football coach last year and is a Boys and Girls Club volunteer.
