Appling County School System is proud to begin partnering with Altamaha Technical College in Baxley, which is offering Dual Enrollment to students at Appling County High School. Superintendent of Schools, Scarlett Copeland stated, “Dr. Starr and I are extremely pleased to partner with ATC in Baxley to increase opportunities for our students at Appling County High School. We are also fortunate to have City Manager, Jeff Baxley, who is a member of the Altamaha Technical College Board, to promote partnership between Appling County Schools and ATC in Baxley. We also commend Pam Stone, ACHS Contact for dual enrollment programs; she has done an outstanding job increasing Dual Enrollment and promoting the Accel program.”
The Accel program offers the opportunity for students at ACHS who meet the college admission criteria to take college level courses in a college setting. These courses allow the student to earn high school credit as well as college/university credit simultaneously. Altamaha Technical College is currently partnering with 21 accredited colleges and universities that will accept this credit once these students graduate high school and are ready to transfer. A few of these colleges and universities include University of Georgia, Georgia Southern University, and Valdosta State University.
Currently we have 26 students who are enrolled in the Accel program at ATC. At the end of this semester these students will have earned six to 12 college credit hours, depending on their individual course loads. Parent and student information sessions were held at ACHS on Monday, March 4 in order to promote this program and educate parents and students about this opportunity which is of no cost to the student.
